American Airlines adds Austin flights to Jamaica, Cozumel
AUSTIN (KXAN) – Two resorts famous for their beaches will soon be easier to reach for people flying out of Austin.
American Airlines announced Friday that it will add year-round service from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to Cozumel, Mexico and Montego Bay, Jamaica. Flights will begin on June 11th. The airline noted that these will be the company’s seventh and eighth international routes offered from Austin.
Flights from Austin to Cozumel take place on Saturdays at the following times:
- The outgoing flight departs from Austin at 9.20 and arrives in Cozumel at 11.50.
- The incoming flight leaves Cozumel at 12.30 and is back to Austin at. 15.20
Service between Austin and Montego Bay is also scheduled on Saturdays at these times:
- The outgoing flight departs at 8.00 and arrives in Jamaica at. 11.23
- The incoming flight departs at 12.03 and arrives in Austin at 15.53
Travelers can start buying tickets online for these new US flights on January 24th.
Since the beginning of 2021, American Airlines has added 32 destinations from Austin. In total, the airline offers 40 destinations from the capital of Texas.
“We are proud to strengthen our commitment to Austin by giving local customers more opportunities to fly non-stop to popular destinations,” Brian Znotins, American Airlines’ vice president of network planning, said in a statement.
The Austin Business Journal reported that Southwest Airlines will also begin flying from Austin Airport to Cozumel from June 11th. The airline will start offering direct flights to Amsterdam, the Netherlands on March 28, after the pandemic delayed its first launch.
Airlines are announcing these additional flights from Austin-Bergstrom as passenger traffic returns from the low point at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airport recently shared new data showing 1,590,918 passengers flew out of Austin in November. This is an increase of 212% from the November 2020 total. It also represents the third busiest month ever for Austin.
Virgin Atlantic, founded by British billionaire Richard Branson, will start flying from AUS to London Heathrow on 25 May four times a week. It’s Virginia’s first new route in the United States since 2015, airport officials said in a press release.
