The accident happened between Staincross and Newmillerdam, with the road closed between Shaw Lane and Warren Lane.

The road is expected to be closed for a period of time while the investigation continues, officers said, and any witnesses are being urged to come forward.

Superintendent Alan Travis, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “This is an absolutely tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of six lives.

“Our thoughts are with the families of those who have died and we extend our support to them in these difficult times.”

Police cars came and went all night, each one checked by officers stationed at the edge of the cordon.

Here it is silent. Under the bright lights of a gas station, the road curves out of sight and sinks into darkness.

On the other side of the cordon, a truck went to recover the vehicles involved.

What happened there cost the lives of six people.

It is a nightmare for families who will no doubt be desperate for answers.
