‘You’re hired’ – BBC launches Birmingham apprenticeship training center for creative industries

‘You’re hired’ – those are the words hundreds of new apprentices have heard after the BBC launched a new training center in Birmingham.

The BBC – home of the hit TV show The Apprentice – opens up more opportunities for young people to get their dream jobs in the media.

Two hundred new apprentices started at the BBC on 17 January in a variety of production, journalism, technology and business support roles. They will each receive training and job experience.

Now the BBC – formerly condemned for its consumption record in the Midlands – is launching the Birmingham Center to place apprentices with employers in the local creative sector.

The BBC will co-finance the apprenticeships, while Google will pay training costs for apprentices placed in local organizations.

The BBC said it aimed to double its commitment to apprenticeships and have 1,000 apprentices by 2026.

Lord Sugar, the star of BBC Ones The Apprentice, backs the push.

He said: “These are good opportunities for people to get world-class training and develop their careers. And the good news is that you do not have to meet me in the boardroom, but you have to be ambitious and like to have a career in the creative industries.

“The BBC’s Apprentice Hub in Birmingham will develop the kind of skills that are much needed in the creative sector of the city and the wider region. I would encourage employers to get involved.”

BBC studies in the mailbox

The Apprenticeship Hub will place up to 50 apprentices with local small and medium-sized employers in the creative sector.

The apprentices will receive experience and training from leading learning providers.

Tim Davie, Director-General of the BBC, said: “The creative sector is growing. This is good news for the West Midlands, where there are real opportunities.

“I’m delighted to welcome the BBC, 200 apprentices who started last week. I’m excited to be working with employers across the Midlands. It’s an exciting time.”

The BBC is working with Create Central, the West Midlands’ creative development agency, to find employers to hire apprentices.
