Williamsville Schools condemns ‘unacceptable’ homework

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY (WIVB) – Williamsville Central School District condemns a homework assignment given by a Spanish teacher that some parents criticized as racist.

“The task created by the teacher and given to the students was unacceptable,” the district said in a statement.

The assignment, which was shared with News 4 by concerned parents, asked students to translate sentences into Spanish. One thing to translate was, “You’re Mexican and ugly.” At the bottom of the spreadsheet was a phrase to be translated, “You are beautiful and American.”

“We are dealing with the situation to ensure that it does not happen again. The district does not tolerate any instructional material that degrades our students, families, culture or beliefs,” the statement said. “Our goal as a district is to create a consciously inviting learning environment that celebrates our community and its diversity. This task does not meet our standard and will be addressed properly.”

Williamsville Superintendent Dr. Darren Brown-Hall read the above statement at Tuesday night’s board meeting. The Board of Directors has not clarified whether it will take further action.
