Stockport County

Stockport County is a football club in Greater Manchester, England. The club is nicknamed “The Hatters” after the town’s historic hat-making industry. They play in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. The club was founded in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers, and became Stockport County in 1890. The team has competed in the FA Cup and League Cup, and their best-ever finish was Fourth Division champions in 1996–97.

Stockport County was formed in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers by workers in the hat-making industry in the town of Stockport, Greater Manchester. The team played in the Manchester and District Challenge Cup. They won the competition in 1885–86, and repeated the feat the following season. In 1890, the club joined the Football Alliance, and became professional. They took the name Stockport County in 1891.

The club entered the FA Cup for the first time in the 1891–92 season, and reached the second round before losing to Bolton Wanderers. In 1892, Stockport County joined the Lancashire League. The club won the league in 1895–96, and were runners-up the following season.

In 1897, the team joined the Second Division of the Football League. They finished the season in fourth place, and were promoted to the First Division. However, they were relegated back to the Second Division after just one season.

The club reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1898 and 1899, but lost both times. In 1900, they joined the Manchester League, and won the league in 1901–02.

In 1902, Stockport County joined the Lancashire Combination. The club won the league in 1904–05. They reached the FA Cup semi-finals again in 1906, but lost to Everton.

In 1907, the team joined the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination. They finished the season in second place, and were promoted to the First Division.

In 1909, Stockport County joined the North Eastern League. The club won the league in 1912–13.

In 1914, the team joined the Central League. However, the First World War suspension of football meant that the league was not played until 1919–20.

After the war, Stockport County joined the Football League Third Division North. The club’s first season in the league was 1919–20, and they finished in sixth place.

In 1921, the team moved to Edgeley Park.

In 1925, Stockport County won the Third Division North title, and were promoted to the Second Division. However, they were relegated back to the Third Division North after just one season.

In 1930, the team won the Third Division North title again, and were once more promoted to the Second Division. This time, they managed to stay in the division for four seasons, before being relegated back to the Third Division North in 1934.

In 1935, the team won the Third Division North title for the third time, and were promoted to the Second Division. However, they were once again relegated back to the Third Division North after just one season.

The team won the Third Division North title for the fourth time in 1937–38, and were once again promoted to the Second Division. However, they were relegated back to the Third Division North in 1939.

The Third Division North was cancelled in 1939 due to the Second World War, and did not resume until 1946–47. In the first season after the war, Stockport County finished in third place.

In 1948–49, the team won the Third Division North title for the fifth time, and were promoted to the Second Division. However, they were once again relegated back to the Third Division North in 1950.

In 1951–52, the team won the Third Division North title for the sixth time, and were promoted to the Second Division. They managed to stay in the division for three seasons, before being relegated back to the Third Division North in 1954.

In 1955–56, the team won the Third Division North title for the seventh time, and were promoted to the Second Division. They managed to stay in the division for four seasons, before being relegated back to the Third Division North in 1959.

In 1960–61, the team won the Third Division North title for the eighth time, and were promoted to the Second Division. They managed to stay in the division for three seasons, before being relegated back to the Third Division North in 1963.

In 1964–65, the team finished in second place in the Third Division North, and were promoted to the Second Division.

In 1965–66, the team won the Second Division title, and were promoted to the First Division.

In 1967–68, the team reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, but lost to Arsenal.

In 1968–69, the team reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup, but lost to Bayern Munich.

In 1970–71, the team reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, but lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

In 1971–72, the team won the League Cup, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final. It was the first time a team from the Third Division had won the competition.

In 1972–73, the team reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, but lost to Leeds United.

In 1973–74, the team finished in sixth place in the First Division, and qualified for the UEFA Cup. They reached the semi-finals of the competition, but lost to Feyenoord.

In 1974–75, the team reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, but lost to Aston Villa.

In 1975–76, the team reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, but lost to Southampton.

In 1979–80, the team reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, but lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In 1980–81, the team won the League Cup for the second time, beating Manchester City in the final.

In 1981–82, the team reached the semi-finals of the European Cup, but lost to Barcelona.

In 1983–84, the team finished in fourth place in the First Division, and qualified for the UEFA Cup. They reached the semi-finals of the competition, but lost to Anderlecht.

In 1984–85, the team won the League Cup for the third time, beating Everton in the final.
