I loved almost everything about The Boys season 4 finale except for the unskippable 90-second Amazon Prime Video ad in the middle, and now it’s time to move on to season 5.
There’s a lot of promising news about the season, and not just because you know it exists. The question wasn’t whether the show would return for a fifth season, but whether it would only come back for a season 5, or continue beyond. Eric Kripke had initially hinted that this would be the case, but ultimately changed his mind, so season 5 is the end.
Kripke Talk about how things will eventually escalate at the highest level with Homelander’s de facto control over the entire country:
“You know, I think the Season 4 finale really shows that we’ve been planning for five years from the beginning, because there’s no way a show is going to go another season after the events of that finale. As far as we’re concerned, it’s our show’s version of the apocalypse.
Homelander gets everything he wanted all along, which is to completely remake the United States in his image and according to his whims. The Boys are at their lowest, most of them are captured and we worry about their future.
“I always look at it as if the five seasons were happening, like we got to a point where everyone was really at their lowest and everyone had faced their own demons. Now they really have to come together in season five and save the world.”
The finale also gave us some good news as the final scene of the episode shows Homelander informed that Soldier Boy is in fact alive and in stasis, meaning the fan-favorite character will be returning for Season 5. There are also reports that his supernatural brother Jared Padalecki will have a role given to him by Kripke for Season 5 for even more of a reunion.
Antony Starr think that Season 5 is the perfect time for the show and Homelander to take their final bow:
“I think everybody wants to end on a strong note, and I think there’s nothing worse — and I was on a show that did this, it was horrible — you do that last season and it’s crap. And you’re really badly remembered and you kind of have to carry that. I like to think we’ll end on a really strong note and I think we all deserve it.”
The only bad news here is the timing, there were two full years between the last two seasons of The Boys, compared to about a year and a half previously. But barring any strikes, perhaps that could reduce that to two years this time around. But we don’t know what’s going to happen, just that production and filming will begin in November, just a few months away. I’m looking forward to the final result.
