Second suspect in Sept. 15 carjacking arrested

Ronny, November 21, 2023

SAN MATEO – A second suspect in an armed carjacking two months ago in San Mateo was arrested last week, according to police.

The suspect, identified as an 18-year-old Antioch man, was arrested Nov. 16, the San Mateo Police Department said in a news release Monday.

Police said the incident happened around 12:15 p.m. on Sept. 15, when the victim parked his work van near the intersection of 42nd Avenue and Edison Street. The suspects parked in front of the van and reportedly ordered the victim to get out at gunpoint.

One of the suspects, identified as an 18-year-old Oakland man, drove away in the van, according to police.

Later that same day, officers found and pursued the van into San Francisco, where the driver was arrested. Police said he was found with a loaded and unregistered handgun.

Detectives continued to investigate the case and eventually identified the second suspect in the carjacking.

Both suspects were booked into jail on charges of carjacking and second-degree robbery. In addition, the Oakland man was booked on charges of making criminal threats and evading, as well as several weapons offenses, including carrying a loaded firearm in public.
