The World Series champions are adding an MVP.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Astros and veteran slugger Jose Abreu are finalizing a three-year contract that would make him the club’s new first baseman.
Abreu, 35, had spent his entire nine-year career with the Chicago White Sox and was named American League MVP in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Last season he saw his power dip with a career-low 15 home runs, but still collected 40 doubles and hit in .304/.378/.446 in 157 games.
For his career, Abreu has hit .292/.354/.506 with 243 home runs in 1,270 games.
Yuli Gurriel, the Astros’ first baseman for the past seven years, is a free agent.
