Police officer attacked with axe in Welsh village

Armed police officers raided a residential property in a Welsh village today after a police officer was attacked with an axe. A heavy police presence was seen at an address in Dwygyfylchi, County Conwy, with road closures and a police cordon in place.

Police have asked the public to be patient as they deal with the incident, North Wales Live reportsA spokesperson said earlier: “There is currently a significant police presence at a residential property in Dwygyfylchi. Armed officers are at the scene, which is contained. Road closures and a police cordon are in place to maintain public safety.

Later that evening, North Wales Police released a further statement saying: “Shortly before 3.30pm this afternoon (Wednesday), officers attended a residential property in Dwygyfylchi for a routine policing operation. A police officer was subsequently assaulted by a man wielding an axe and sustained injuries to his hand.”

They said a police operation was then launched, involving armed officers. They added: “At 21:08 officers entered the property and a 57-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding. We understand this operation has caused concern and disruption and we appreciate the patience and support of the local community as we resolve this incident.”

Police officer attacked with axe

North Wales Police statement on police incident in Dwygyfylchi: “Shortly before 3.30pm this afternoon (Wednesday), officers attended a residential property in Dwygyfylchi for a routine policing operation. The road remains closed

According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, the roads remain closed. “Ysguborwen Road is closed in both directions due to an incident with police between Gogarth Avenue and Old Mill Road,” reads its latest update, published at 9:18pm.

Officers still on scene

Shortly before 8pm, North Wales Police issued a further statement confirming they were still at the scene of the incident.

He said: “Officers continue to cordon off the scene of an ongoing incident at a residential property in Dwygyfylchi.

“A police cordon and road closures remain in place to maintain public safety.

“We apologise for the disruption this is causing to the local community and thank you for your patience whilst we resolve this issue.”

The incident happened on Ysguborwen Road – with the road closed in both directions between Gogarth Avenue and Old Mill Road.
