It’s San Diego Comic-Con weekend, and the Marvel Studios panel is almost upon us. To say that fans are anxious to see what Kevin Feige and co. have in store would be an understatement. Although there’s still some time before the big event, it would seem that a cool piece of material has already dropped. Marvel Cinematic Universe devotees have received the first official look at Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania via a sweet piece of art. Not only that, but the image also reveals the first official glimpses of Kang the Conqueror and a new MCU hero.
Andy Park, Marvel Studios’ Director of Visual Development, dropped his awesome image on Instagram. The gorgeous rendering shows the titular Ant-Man and Wasp alongside Cassie Lang, who’s sporting a purple suit similar to theirs. And towering above them in the background is none other than Kang the Conqueror. Well, this isn’t He Who Remains we’re talking about – this is Kang proper. Check out the image for yourself down below:
Fans have been eager to see more of Kang and, while this is only a brief snippet of what we can expect, it definitely looks promising. Based on Andy Park’s work, it seems that he and director Peyton Reed opted for a look that’s relatively similar to the character’s distinguished appearance in the comics. One would think that the all-powerful being will look even more intimidating in actual footage. I don’t know about all of you, but I can’t wait to see more!
In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniathe conqueror will be played by the formidable Jonathan Majors, who previously portrayed the villain’s aforementioned variant in Loki. Majors has spoken about bringing Kang to the threequel and, while he’s been careful not to drop spoilers, it sounds like this being is very different from the one he played on the Disney+ show. And that makes sense, considering this person is far nastier and has done some awful things throughout his history in Marvel Comics.
On a lighter note, it’s great that the two heroes will have some help in their fight against the powerful enemy. Cassie Lang, who fans met as a small child in the franchise’s original 2015 flick, is now a teen and played by Kathryn Newton – who got ripped for her MCU debut. The character always dreamed of suiting up alongside her superhero father, so this is certainly a full-circle moment indeed.
Cassie’s future in the cinematic universe isn’t set in stone just yet, but those who’ve read the comics are probably of the thinking that she’ll eventually become the hero known as Stature. Such a development would make complete sense and, if that’s the case, this could be her “trial by fire,” so to speak. Cassie’s likely superhero status makes her yet another prime candidate for the Young Avengers, who could be established within the MCU sometime soon.
After this poster reveal, one has to wonder if Marvel Studios will actually show any footage from Quantumania, which finished filming last November and is set to arrive sooner than expected (albeit with a trade-off). I think there’s a good chance that footage featuring both Kang and Cassie will be screened. But as for whether it would be released for fans who aren’t fortunate enough to be in Hall H, that’s another story.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set to open in theaters on February 17, 2023. While you wait for the movie, check out the first two by streaming them with a Disney+ subscription.
