If you had planned a trip to Japan until it closed its borders, well, then we have some news that may comfort you on the food front. There’s a new restaurant from two talented Japanese chefs opening in Mayfair early next year, called Roji.
The name Roji can be translated as either ‘travel / path’ or ‘hidden alley’, which is appropriate enough as this is a small sanctuary tucked down a back alley in Mayfair. In fact, you need to be quick with your reservations as it is an intimate 10-person situation from husband-and-wife chefs Tamas Naszai and Tomoko Hasegawa. And when we say ‘skilled’ chefs, it’s no understatement: Both Tamas and Tomoko have previously worked at Tokimeitē in Mayfair, a restaurant specializing in high quality Wagyu. Tamas is also a two-time winner of the Japanese Culinary Arts Competition, and Tomoko has also worked on the three Michelin-starred L’Abysse au Pavillon Ledoyen in Paris as well as Ginza Shimon in Tokyo.
Saga Restaurant Group (responsible for Mayfair’s Chisou and Great Portland Streets Sushi Atelier) are partners in the company. It is important to know because priority reservations, taken from January 2022, will be given to customers at these restaurants before reservations are opened to the public, which only seems reasonable.
So what’s on the menu at Roji? Think: seasonal British produce with a focus on sushi, pickling and preserving, char-grilled goods and simmering dishes, all served on carefully selected service from small family producers in both Japan and the UK. In terms of ancestry, you can expect seafood from Cornish fishermen and vegetables from the Nama Yasai farm in East Sussex, as well as fed herbs and mushrooms.
There will be five dinners and four lunches a week, with dinners costing around £ 150 per person. head (excl. drinks) with lower prices for lunch. In terms of beverages, there will be a first-class sake list with hard-to-pick bottles and limited editions.
