Manchester United set to battle Rangers for 28-year-old’s signature

Rangers could face competition from Manchester United to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this summer, according to a report, as the Premier League giants mull over a move for their former Academy star.

The Light Blues have been linked with a move for Johnstone for a while but a new report from 90 Mins claims the Old Trafford side are considering making a move for him at the end of the season.

Johnstone has been with West Brom since 2018 and has picked up three caps for England over the last 12 months, winning a place in last summer’s squad for Euro 2020.

According to the report, West Ham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Rangers are all interested in a move for Johnstone when his deal ends, but the interest from Old Trafford is likely to complicate things.

My Europa League Predictions.

Returning to Old Trafford would likely see him act as understudy to David de Gea while joining Rangers would almost certainly see Johnstone pushing to replace Allan McGregor as number one.

The veteran Rangers keeper turned 40 earlier this year and it seems inevitable that he will make the decision to call it quits at the end of the season and wrap up a glittering playing career.

McGregor has been hugely important to the Light Blues in recent years but there’s a feeling that this is, perhaps, one season too far for him.

A move for Johnstone to compete with Jon McLaughlin would make for a really interesting battle for his gloves at Ibrox – although Robby McCrorie will be hoping he can force his way into the conversation as McGregor’s replacement.

Here’s how we’re backing the Rangers side to line-up against Motherwell at Ibrox – has Aaron Ramsey made the cut?
