Manchester United rival fellow top-six suitor after joining race for available € 30m midfield talent Fabian Ruiz

Manchester United could be contenders to sign Fabian Ruiz from Napoli, although they face competition from Arsenal, according to a report.

Ruiz is entering the final year of his contract with Napoli, where he has played since 2018. It seems unlikely he will agree to a renewal, so the Serie A side are considering his sale.

The Premier League could be the Spaniard’s next destination. He has been linked with Arsenal and Newcastle United in recent weeks.

But according to RAI journalist Ciro Venerato, Manchester United could pose a threat to Arsenal in particular in the transfer battle.

He told Domenica Sportive Estate that Napoli’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, is ready to sell the central midfielder.

Venerato said: “De Laurentiis would like to give away Fabian Ruiz, valued at € 30m, and on him are Arsenal and Manchester United.”

In a further sign Napoli are preparing for Ruiz’s exit, Venerato named Hellas Verona midfielder Antonin Barak as their target to replace him.

Ruiz’s price tag of € 3om equates to a fee in the region of £ 25.5m. It would seem affordable for Arsenal and Man Utd, both of whom qualified for the Europa League via their finishing positions in the 2021-22 Premier League.

Each club is on the lookout for midfield reinforcements ahead of the new campaign. Man Utd will be losing Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic from their midfield ranks.

In turn, their priority target appears to be Frenkie De Jong of Barcelona. Yet a deal for the Dutchman may be costlier than one for Ruiz.

Therefore, it seems the ex-Real Betis ace could be on their shortlist too. They could provide him with his first taste of Premier League football.

So too could an Arsenal side who have been tipped to lose Thomas Partey, perhaps, in the summer transfer window. Even if not, they have been aiming to invest in their midfield anyway.

Therefore, Ruiz could have plenty of options to consider. He has also been tipped to return to La Liga in his native country before.

Fabian Ruiz may fit better at Arsenal

Napoli playmaker Fabian Ruiz

While Man Utd do need a new midfielder, it is more likely they will be looking for the defensive variety, given Matic’s exit and a lack of other similar options.

True, Pogba and Lingard are more attacking players who will leave their own voids. However, there are other options among the current squad to take their places.

Adding a defensive midfielder would also free up the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay. They have had to play sitting roles over the past couple of seasons but are good going forwards. Therefore, playmaker Ruiz may not be the type of player Man Utd need.

In contrast, Arsenal have plenty of cover in the deeper midfield territories. Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny in particular provide balance to their spine.

But putting a playmaker into the mix would give the Gunners a new dimension. They have creative players in the final third and could do with more in the middle – especially if Partey goes.

Hence, while Man Utd may carry a lure as a club, Ruiz may be best off picking Arsenal next. But it is easy to see why the Old Trafford move may tempt him if it becomes an option.
