Manchester United may target Steven Bergwijn as Tottenham Hotspur set price tag

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United could decide to target Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn in the summer transfer window.

According to ESPN, Tottenham are open to parting ways with Bergwijn as they look to raise some funds to bring in their desired targets ahead of next season.

Bergwijn is admired by Antonio Conte, and the latter is willing to keep hold of him at Tottenham even now. Despite that, the winger has struggled to get game time under Conte, which has caused him to look for potential options elsewhere. He wants to become a regular with the 2022 Qatar World Cup drawing close by the minute.

Erik ten Hag is a fan of Bergwijn’s qualities which could result in an attempt from the Red Devils to sign him this summer. Ajax had expressed an interest in the forward when ten Hag was still their manager back in January. As such, it remains to be seen whether the boss will demand his services or not in the future.

Man Utd need Bergwijn?

Even though Bergwijn is flexible enough to play anywhere in the attack, he is much more suited to be utilized on the left-hand side of the frontline. His versatility, which has been lauded by Conte, could prove to be useful if we fail to find a replacement for the departing Edinson Cavani.

Furthermore, Bergwijn could also provide ten Hag with an option to use on the right-wing, which is an area where we need reinforcements following Mason Greenwood’s indefinite suspension. Perhaps it is better to use the Spurs ace on the left wing and move Jadon Sancho towards the opposite end.

Sancho has played on the right at Borussia Dortmund, and if ten Hag can help him find his feet again, we could have an attack with cutting edge on both wings. That being said, doubts can be raised on whether we would eye Bergwijn since there are many options in the squad as of now.

After all, there are others like Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Anthony Elanga and even the upcoming Alejandro Garnacho who can put a shift on the left-wing. Bergwijn provides a great opportunity for us right now as he costs just £ 21.4million in transfer fees.

However, since many positions need to be bolstered in our squad this summer, it may not be wise to spend on areas where we can manage for the time being with the current set of choices. It will be interesting to see whether the Manchester side would register their interest or not this summer.

If there are plans to sign Bergwijn, it would be best to make an early move with the Eredivisie club actively trying to get their hands on the 24-year-old ahead of the next campaign.
