“There is no justification for this tragedy”

Mat MacDonald, co-chair of Better Streets for Birmingham, responded to the devastating news that a man had lost his life in the collision.

“It is absolutely heartbreaking to see that once again, somewhere in our city, another family is waking up to the most unimaginable grief. Our thoughts are with them and everyone else who has been affected by this horrific collision.

“There is no justification for this tragedy. Birmingham’s streets are not fit for purpose. We do not accept a violent death every two weeks as the price to pay for people to be able to move around.”

“There is an emergency on our streets and more investment is desperately needed to make them safer. We have been calling for action on this for over a year but very little has changed.

“Our local and regional leaders must urgently determine how and when they will finally tackle this problem, before more lives are lost.”
