The 2023 Golden Globes are attempting a triumphant return after last year’s virtual ceremony which was caused by shifting leadership and criticism for their lack of Black representation. But with their heavy baggage and award contender Brendan Fraser’s boycott, will they be able to pull it off? We’ll see.
This morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will kick off the awards season with George and Mayan Lopez announcing the nominees for the 2023 Golden Globe Awards. And while assessing the fresh wave of new movies and television shows, some big changes have been made to the organization.
The HFPA has announced that they will be introducing four new categories to the ceremony, including Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series/Musical-Comedy or Drama, Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series/ Musical-Comedy or Drama, Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/Anthology or Motion Picture Made for Television and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/Anthology or Motion Picture Made for Television. They have also welcomed 103 new voters (representing 62 countries) to diversify their voting body’s demographics.
Now, here’s the fun part: who’s going to be nominated? There have been lot of good new releases. Like, a lot, a lot. This year saw a massive number of blockbusters hit the big screen, such as the highly anticipated Avatar 2: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Steven Spielberg‘s (a.k.a. the father of blockbusters) The Fabelmans. Audiences and critics alike have also responded well to indie releases this year with notable mentions being A24’s Aftersun, Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale.
The streamers came in strong with buzzy features like Cha Cha Real Smooth and Nanny, and more importantly, they continue to dominate the TV game with a new installment of The Crown and the debut of Severance. Those two, of course, will be going head-tohead with fan-favorites The White Lotus Season 2 and Abbott Elementary. In all, the odds are stacked.
The 80th Golden Globes, hosted by Jerrod Carmichael, will air Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET a on NBC and Peacock.
