It was expected to be the biggest launch of the year, and it certainly lives up to those expectations – and beyond.
Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” is projected to generate a three-day opening weekend of $195 million to $205 million in the United States, the eighth or ninth-highest domestic debut of all time and tied with the first “Black Panther” and “Avengers” films.
Its $96 million in opening-day revenue (including previews) is also the sixth-highest ever, behind only a handful of Marvel titles and “Star Wars.”
Internationally, the film hopes to do even better in various global markets, so much so that its global box office could reach $420 million or more in its opening weekend. With this, Marvel has now surpassed the $30 billion mark at the global box office.
The news comes just hours ahead of the studio’s massive panel in Hall H at Comic Con, which is expected to reveal big news and updates on Marvel’s upcoming programming.
The success has taken a toll in the United States, with “Twisters” dropping 56% in its second weekend to $36 million, coming in second. “Despicable Me 4” is third with $14.5 million, “Inside Out 2” is fourth with $8.7 million and “Longlegs” fifth with $6.9 million.
