City-led weather shelters launched in Austin ahead of the night freeze

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Ahead of a Sunday morning weather forecast that includes low temperatures below freezing, the city of Austin announced that its cold weather shelter has been activated for Saturday night.

The city is partnering with Travis County, Capital Metro, The Salvation Army, Front Steps and other service providers in the area to provide shelter resources when temperatures drop near or below freezing.

Those in need of shelter will be asked to go to the One Texas Center building, located at 505 Barton Springs Road, between 6pm and 8pm tonight. The cold weather shelter location is located offsite and a specific address is not revealed by the privacy.

COVID-19 security measures will be in place at the shelter, including masking, social distancing and sanitation practices. Anyone who uses the shelter is required to undergo a health screening before attending the shelter, according to a news release from the city.
