Bob McGrath Sesame Street

Bob McGrath, who has played the kindly patriarch on “Sesame Street” since the early days of the show, has announced that he is leaving the program.

McGrath made the announcement on Thursday during a taping of the “Sesame Street” podcast, saying that he has been “thinking about this for a long time.”

“I have been associated with ‘Sesame Street’ for 50 years now,” McGrath said. “That’s a long time. And it’s been a great honor and a privilege to be able to work with the cast and the crew and everyone associated with the show.”

McGrath, 84, joined the cast of “Sesame Street” in its first season in 1969. He has played the music teacher on the show, and has also been the voice of several characters, including Count von Count.

“I’m not leaving because I’m unhappy,” McGrath said. “I’m just leaving because it’s time.”

“I’m 84 years old,” he added. “I don’t want to be doing this when I’m 90.”

McGrath’s announcement came as a surprise to many, including his “Sesame Street” co-star, Caroll Spinney, who plays Big Bird.

“I’m shocked,” Spinney said. “I had no idea he was leaving.”

“I’m going to miss him,” Spinney added. “He’s been a wonderful friend and colleague.”

McGrath said that he plans to stay involved with “Sesame Street” in some capacity, but did not elaborate on what that might entail.

“I’m not disappearing,” he said. “I’ll still be around, but not in the same way.”

McGrath’s departure from “Sesame Street” comes at a time when the show is undergoing major changes. In recent years, the show has expanded its focus to include more diverse characters and topics, such as dealing with racism and gender identity.
