Beautiful commuter village 40 minutes away Londoners keep moving to, home to one of Britain’s best Sunday roasts

The brains behind Rate Good Roasts Instagram page revealed their top ten best Sunday roasts in the UK.

London appeared twice, with Islings 12:51 and Belgravia’s The Thomas Cubitt coming in second and eighth respectively.

Also among the best of the best was The Cricketers in Cobham, Surrey.

Cobham is packed with amenities

The commuter town’s pub managed to win a shared fifth place along with Black Labrador in Underbarrow, Cumbria and the White House in Church Fenton, North Yorkshire – with as much as 89% of out of 100.

The roasts were judged on their meat, vegetables, fried potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy, as well as ratings for the place and service.

The cricketers’ rise scored perfect tens for their venue, drinks, value for money and Yorkshire puds.

You can put in either roast beef, outdoor farmed British pork, a half-fried grain-fed garden chicken or a packet of smoked cheese of beetroot and cherry wood.

All roasts are served with cauliflower cheese, roasted seasonal vegetables, winter kale, bottomless roasted potatoes, yorkshires and gravy.

Use £ 22.50 for two dishes or you can add a third for £ 5 (or as they are priced).

Although the pub does not serve top rated Sunday roasts, you will find a selection of premium British steaks, pheasant sausage and mash as well as sticky toffee pudding.

You will also find a large amount of outdoor space in this large village, including Painshill Park.

With expansive grounds, Gothic ruins, its Serpentine Lake and its own winery, the park has everything you could want for a day away from London.

One of the wonders of Painshill is its Crystal Grotto – and it’s an incredible Instagrammabel.

The cave is a naturalistic cave covered with sparkling, bubbling water, rough stones and stalactites (which are icicle shaped for you and me) adorned with amazing, sparkling crystals.

The village is also packed with other eateries, including Fego – perfect for your to-go lunch.

Find all kinds of breakfast and brunch all day, Earl Gray and Citrus Cured Salmon rice bowls, Fego Chicken & waffles and their BBQ Short rib burger.

Cobham is a premier place for Londoners who want to escape from the city, with one record number of people traveling to greener pastures.

As many as 30,035 people left London to move to Surrey in the year to June 2019 – the latest data available for comparison.

While 16,699 people moved from Surrey to London, according to data from the Office for National Statistics.

These figures are expected to increase when the pandemic is taken into account.

The village provides a lot of open space

Elmbridge , where Cobham is located, had the highest net profit of people from London in Surrey, with 4,480 moving to the area from London.

In contrast, 2,256 people moved from the area to the city, with a net difference of 2,224.

From March 2020, the average home costs £ 441,068 in Surrey compared to the average £ 486,000 it costs to buy a home in London – so you get a little more for your money.

Painshill Park is a popular attraction

FT reported in October 2020 that more than two-thirds of buyers who registered with real estate agents Savills’ Weybridge office (68%) were from London.

Before the pandemic, it was only 27%.

Cobham is ideally located for those who want to escape from London to get a taste of the countryside.

But if you’re not ready to commit to moving just yet, a visit to Cobham for one of the UK’s best Sunday roasts might just seal the deal.
